This recording sounds pretty good for an audience recording in 1976. You can hear everything clearly and the show itself is really good. Yes 7-18-76 is
...
the best show of the run but the others have plenty of moments worth listening to, if you like to listen to the Dead.

As a performance, this one is okay, not bad but certainly nothing special. The 18th is the one to get out of this Orpheum run- the second set of that show
...
is a monster, probably the best of 1976.
Problem is, the sound is so weak on this version it's not worth getting unless it's your only option. I'd hold off and search for the board.
That said, people need to quit crying like spoiled babies that the boards are gone from this site. If said it before and I'll say it again: with THOUSANDS of hours of FREE Grateful Dead music in wide circualtion, this idea that we're somehow getting screwed because they took down the boards in beyond ridiculous. The Archive was a great way to collect a lot of boards really quickly but it's not the only way to aquire high quality Dead shows. Get over it and get a life.

yet another example of how worthless this website is wiothout the soundboards. Like the last reveiweer, I as well have enough out of pitch audience tapes,

thank you. Bring back tihe boards! This is sucvh crap. The only reason me and many othe rlong-time Heads bought official releases is because the boards were so easily accessible, it was our way of thanking the band. Let's face it, the offical release pretty much siuck, I go back to summer of '81 when dead Set anbd Reckoning came out. The Dick's Picks totally suck, maybe one or two of them are complete shows. They got off to a good start with thye first two vault releases, even though everyone and their brother had the GAMH '75 show already, they released the whole thing. Since Healy stopped being involvedf the whole music side went way down hill. Now that the band took the boards away, I see no reason to buy their offical products anymore. Unless of course they come out with something real good.

is that the show has been sped up by a Half Step. This occurs when the recording deck is running slightly faster than the play deck. The data is compressed

into a smaller amount of tape, and since it's analog, this compresses the waveforms as well so that they occur at a higher frequency. The most common result is an increase of a half step in pitch and a slightly faster tempo. The opposite effect occurs if you switch the play and record decks. An extreme version of this can be heard during high speed dubbing, with an increase of nearly an octave in pitch (although the dubbed tape will sound normal - the effect only is heard during the process). The overtones are also messed with so that even a slightly sped up tape sounds tinny.
I'll trust that this is a good show. Unfortunately, with the soundboards now streaming-only, finding a good audience tape, at proper pitch, to download is the proverbial needle in the haystack. I already have plenty of out-of-pitch tapes, thank you very much!

This AUD's a little on the trebly, echo-y side of things, but this show is a blinder. At least check out this Let It Grow, or the Stella! St. Stephen has

some wicked slick mellow licks.
A nice night 2 in one of the greatest post-retirement runs in GD history: Orpheum '76!!
